Mark Etheridge

I am now happily retired from my job as a Radio Operator on an offshore drilling rig in the North Sea. My home is in Aberdeen, but we spend a lot of time at our holiday home in Gran Alacant on the Costa Blanca, where many of these photos have been taken.

I have been a bird photographer for many years, but the advent of digital photography has enabled me to do much more than I ever did with film. The galleries below are a selection of my best shots over the past ten or more years.

I have mostly used a Sigma 150-600 Sports lens to go with my Nikon D500, but in July 2020 I acquired the new lightweight Nikon 500mm Phase Fresnel lens; this has proved to be the best combination I have ever owned and I  will be updating many of my pictures with results from this equipment over the next few months, as it is putting many of my earlier efforts to shame.

My thanks go to the experts at BirdForum, who have assisted in the identification one or two of the more obscure species here, my friends in OUSA Birdwatching who have helped keep me motivated, the Costa Blanca Bird Club (particularly the great Malcolm Palmer who got me started in Spain), John Oliver who convinced me I needed a Nikon SLR, Graham Critchell who showed me many new locations in Spain, Bryan Thomas whose work is far better than mine but who gives me a standard to aim for, Joyce who puts up with it, and a big "hi" to the lovely guys 'n gals in SQ who are still obsessed with my massive zoom and the roundabout ladies.

Dedicated to the memory of AMB, without whom much of this would not have been possible.
